There’s a point a lot of people hit in the gym where things just… stall.
They’re showing up.
They’re doing the workouts.
They’re putting in effort.
But nothing is really changing.
Strength isn’t moving.
Skills aren’t improving.
And they start thinking they need a new program.
Most of the time, they don’t.
They just need to change how they’re approaching training.
The Real Reason You’re Stuck
You’re avoiding the things you’re bad at.
That’s it.
Everyone does it.
You gravitate toward movements you’re comfortable with. You scale in ways that protect your ego. You tell yourself you’ll try that harder skill “when you’re ready.”
The problem is—ready never shows up.
So you stay in the same lane, doing the same things, getting the same results.
Paralysis by Analysis
Another version of this shows up as overthinking.
You start trying to figure everything out before you take action.
- “I need to get stronger first.”
- “I need better conditioning.”
- “I should probably work on my technique before I try that.”
All of that sounds logical.
It’s also what keeps people stuck for years.
Because instead of doing the thing, you keep preparing to do the thing.
What Actually Creates Progress
Trying.
Not perfectly. Not successfully. Just trying.
One of the best moments from the podcast was hearing how long it took before certain skills finally clicked.
Years.
Not because they weren’t capable—but because they hadn’t fully committed to attempting it consistently.
Then one day, they just went for it.
And everything started to change.
Why Failure Is Required
This is the part most people avoid.
Failure in the gym is uncomfortable.
Missing a rep.
Whipping on double unders.
Getting stuck on a rope climb.
It’s frustrating.
But it’s also necessary.
Because failure gives you feedback.
And without that feedback, there’s nothing to adjust.
No adjustment = no progress.
The Shift That Changes Everything
Stop asking:
“Am I ready?”
Start asking:
“What happens if I try?”
That one shift is where progress actually begins.
Because the moment you start attempting things you’re not good at, you give yourself a chance to improve.
And that’s the whole point.
What To Do Next
Look at your training honestly.
What are you avoiding?
What do you keep putting off?
Start there.
Not because it’s comfortable—but because it’s where the growth is.
