Who Moved My Cheese??

I was talking with one of our members the other day and they recommended a short story because they said they thought of me when they read it.

It’s called “Who Moved My Cheese”

This was pretty timely because I’m in Madison this week working at the CrossFIt Games for my 6th year as a judge.

The story is about change and people’s tolerance for risk.

It compares two people in a maze looking for cheese with two mice.

The difference is obviously the intelligence of these creatures, but being complex isn’t always the answer.

Go look it up or just buy it and read it for yourself or your kids.  It’s worth it.

Here are the three big takeaways I got from it:

1) Don’t overthink things. paralysis by analysis is a real thing.  That doesn’t mean throw caution out the door, but we can’t plan for everything we have to move and be action oriented.

2) Nothing lasts forever, regardless of how good or big it is.  Many times we fail or get blind sided because we get comfortable.  We stop looking for our goal  because we “found it”

3) There will always be more cheese once we start looking for it.  Refer back to #1/2.  Scarcity can be wildly detrimental when in pursuit of ones goals.

This is what is unfolding real time with the CrossFit Games.  There are a group of folks who are just complaining about the “old days” and who this is the end.

There is another group of people who are marching towards their new target, not worried about the past, just knowing that we don’t have full control of the future.

The only thing we can do is keep moving and looking for the next target.
