Why finding your people might be the most important reason to start CrossFit

A gym was supposed to be the place she worked out

When Dr. Kaley Norris arrived in Memphis for her medical residency, her world was medicine. Long shifts, endless studying, and coworkers who understandably talked about the one thing that consumed their days: medicine. She wanted something else in her life. So near the end of her intern year, she joined a CrossFit gym. She thought she was signing up for exercise. Instead, she found people who gave her a reason to stay in a city she never expected to call home.

The unexpected reason she stayed

Kaley grew up in Indianapolis, went to college in Ohio, medical school in Kentucky, and landed in Memphis for residency. She never pictured herself staying there. Yet the people she met at the gym changed that equation. She describes friendships that crossed professions, ages, and backgrounds. The gym became a place to do life, not just workouts. There were baby showers, engagement celebrations, and relationships that reached far beyond the hour on the clock. When she says CrossFit kept her in Memphis for years, she means it literally.

An hour that belongs to you

Today Kaley is a pediatrician working in urgent care. On workdays she can finish around 9 or 9:30 at night. Her solution is the 6 a.m. class. It is not glamorous, and it does not require pretending that a 4:30 a.m. alarm feels wonderful. It is simply the time she can protect. For someone who spends the day caring for children and families, the gym is an hour to move, laugh, and talk to adults she wants to spend time with. That is a different definition of wellness from a number on a scale.

The tiny town inside a gym

Kaley describes a CrossFit gym as a tiny town. Someone knows a dentist. Someone can recommend a plumber. Someone helps with a tire. People meet spouses and kids, trade phone numbers, and make plans outside class. It sounds ordinary until you realize how difficult it can be to make friends as an adult. Most places do not create repeated, low-pressure opportunities to see the same people, work through something challenging, and cheer for one another. A good gym does.

Belonging is something you practice

Kaley is the kind of member who introduces herself to new people and decides they are going to be friends. But she was not always that person. She remembers being the quiet, short kid who felt uncomfortable speaking up. She learned to get outside that version of herself over time. The same thing happens in a gym. You arrive knowing nobody. You learn a few names. You share a difficult workout. Eventually the person you once nodded to becomes the person you text when life gets complicated.

What this means if you are thinking about joining

If you are looking for a gym in Virginia Beach, it is reasonable to ask about equipment, programming, and coaching. Ask another question too: Will I want to come back to see these people? Fitness matters. But the friendships that make you want to show up on a difficult Tuesday may be what keeps you training for years. At CrossFit Rife, we say you do not have to work out to hang out. Kaley’s story is a pretty good explanation of why.
