You’re eating clean. You’re hitting workouts. You’re even tracking your portions or macros.

But something still feels off.

You’re bloated half the time. You’re holding on to weight in places you didn’t used to. And no matter how consistent you are, your body just isn’t responding the way you thought it would.

If this sounds familiar, it might be time to stop asking, “What should I cut?” and start asking, “Is my gut healthy enough to let fat loss happen?”

What a “Healthy Gut” Actually Means

You don’t need perfect digestion. But a healthy gut should do the basics well:

  • Break down and absorb nutrients from your food
  • Clear out waste (aka regular, complete poops)
  • Communicate with your hormones and immune system
  • Keep inflammation and bloat in check

When your gut is functioning well, fat loss feels smoother. Energy is more stable. Hunger cues are clearer. Your body isn’t constantly fighting inflammation or discomfort.

But when your gut is stressed, inflamed, or sluggish? Progress slows—even when your habits look good on paper.

Signs Your Gut Might Be Blocking Fat Loss

These aren’t always glaring symptoms. Sometimes it’s subtle, or something you’ve just gotten used to.

Some common red flags:

  • Bloating after meals (or randomly during the day)
  • Constipation, loose stools, or inconsistent digestion
  • Cravings or blood sugar crashes
  • Feeling puffy or inflamed
  • Acne or skin flare-ups
  • Brain fog or low mood
  • Always hungry or never hungry
  • Progress plateau despite consistent effort

Your gut and your metabolism are closely linked. If digestion is off, your body may be in defense mode, not fat-burning mode.

What Can Throw Off Gut Health (Without Fear-Mongering)

Gut health is complex, but these are some common triggers I see in CrossFitters and active adults:

  • Under-eating (especially cutting carbs)
  • Eating too fast or on the go
  • Chronic stress
  • Low fiber intake
  • Too much restriction (which lowers food variety and gut diversity)
  • Antibiotic history or medications
  • Excess caffeine or alcohol

You don’t need a cleanse or detox. But your gut may need some repair and nourishment to get back on track.

What I Focus on First (as a Registered Dietitian)

Before we ever talk about cutting foods or running tests, I look at the basics:

  • Are you eating consistently?
  • Are meals balanced with enough fiber, carbs, and protein?
  • Are you chewing slowly and not eating in fight-or-flight mode?
  • Are you getting enough variety (colors, plants, fermented foods)?
  • Is your stress chronically high without recovery?

Most of the time, supporting gut health means:

  • Adding the right foods and habits
  • Restoring regularity, not obsessing over perfect digestion
  • Creating calm in your routine, not more stress

Sometimes I also use HTMA testing to get more insight into mineral patterns that impact digestion, stress, and metabolism. But we always start with real food and habits first.

Client Story: Healing the Gut, Changing the Body

One client came to me after months of clean eating, tracking macros, and still feeling uncomfortable in her body. She was bloated every afternoon, frustrated with her lack of progress, and exhausted by how much effort she was putting in.

We didn’t slash calories. We focused on digestion.

We adjusted meal timing. We brought back variety. We supported her stress and sleep. We added more fiber, more carbs, and a slower pace.

Within 6 weeks, her bloating was down, energy was up, and her clothes started fitting differently. Her progress wasn’t just about weight—she felt better.

Because sometimes fat loss doesn’t start with a new plan. It starts with getting your body ready to respond.

How I Help Clients Fuel Fat Loss and Gut Health

As a dietitian, I don’t believe in forcing fat loss at the expense of how you feel. Your digestion matters. Your energy matters. And your results are better when both are working together.

I help clients:

  • Eat for their goals and their gut
  • Learn how to reduce bloating and support digestion through food
  • Use real habits, not rigid plans
  • Fuel smarter without triggering inflammation or stress

If your gut feels off, we don’t ignore it. We support it—and let your body catch up to the effort you’re already putting in.
